Would buying a wide angle lens, increase the ability to create that blurred effect?
You know when you focus on your subject, and make the background all blurry, so only your subject is in focus, well if i bought a wide angle lens, im assuming that when i zoom in i would get a more blurry photo than without the lens, am i right?
Not really. The shallow depth of field you are after is achieved by using a combination of a large aperture, focal length and distance between your background and your subject.
Your best bet if your using a DSLR would be a fast prime lens like a 50mm F1.8 $100 or a 50mm F1.4$400-$500. The large aperture will make the difference. A wide angle will not. A wide angle will distort your subject especially if it is a portrait. Wide angle lenses are typically used for landscapes and architecture where you want everything in focus from near to far.
If your using a point and shoot it can be tough but the same applies. Use the largest aperture (smallest F number) you have, make sure there is a good distance between your subject and your background and stand back a little and zoom in. This is going to give you the best possible results.
